KICCE held a Denmark-Korea Seminar on Play Design for Young Children on May 2nd, 2023 (Tuesday) at 3.30 p.m. in its main conference room. This seminar was attended by Sanghee Park, President of KICCE, Mugyeong Moon, Director of the Office of International Research and Data Analysis, Sook In Cho, Head of the International Exchanges and Research Team, those who are involved in KICCE, Professor Helle Marie Skovbjerg, Professor Jess Uhre Rahbek, and Professor Sofie Kinch of Design School Kolding, Denmark. Sanghee Park, President of KICCE, thanked the opportunities to share and discuss recent research results on children’s play in Korea and Denmark with Danish play design experts, after the signing of a business agreement with the LEGO Foundation and LEGO Korea at the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in 2022.

Professor Helle Marie Skovbjerg, Professor Jess Uhre Rahbek, and Professor Sofie Kinch introduced ongoing projects in Lab Design for Play in Design School Kolding, such as ‘Can I Join in?’, and ‘Playful learning research.’ While they emphasized the important role of play for children to drive their healthy and meaningful lives, they introduced cases of designing play in consideration of children’s characteristics and diverse types of play in order for children to actively play. In the discussion, Mugyeong Moon, Director of the Office of International Research and Data Analysis asked a question on Danish parents’ perceptions of play, and measurement of children’s developmental performance via play design. Sook In Cho, Head of the International Exchanges and Research Team, discussed the roles of teachers and peers in play led by children. Furthermore, there were questions and discussions on how to design play depending on play types, and the status of and support for Danish children’s play during the COVID-19 pandemic.

After this seminar, KICCE and expert groups from Design School Kolding, Denmark decided to continuously exchange recent research outcomes and experiences related to children’s play in the future, and to promote cooperative activities such as joint publication of briefs.
